EDC 534: Seminar in Digital Authorship at

Digital Authorship (EDC 534) is offered in the Spring of 2025 semester by Professor Renee Hobbs. It is one of four required courses in the Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy. The course is offered fully online in an asynchronous format for Anytime Learning.

ABOUT THE COURSE: The course examines how AI tools can be used for creative expression and communication, considering some of the legal, ethical, and social issues of human-machine collaboration. Major theories of digital authorship as a pedagogical approach to digital literacy are explored through hands-on dynamic learning experiences that integrate digital media, technologies, and best practice strategies for teaching composition and authorship in a Web 2.0 world.

AI Tools for Creative Collaboration. Explore the role of AI in enabling collaborative digital authorship

Human-Machine Interaction in Authorship. Analyze the evolving relationship between humans and AI in creative processes.

Digital Storytelling. Reflect on the power of narratives that reflect and shape personal and social identity.

Pedagogical Issues with AI. Consider the ways that students and teachers use AI for creative work and learning.

Legal, Ethical and Policy Considerations. Delve into copyright issues, ethical dilemmas, and policy challenges posed by AI in authorship.
LOCATION: Take this class from the comfort of your home – all meetings, activities, and work occurs online. Synchronous Zoom meetings will be available but they are not required.

COST: $1965 USD for non-matriculating students. URI graduate students following the 13- week regular fall course schedule can enroll in the course as an elective.
